Passion Play Tours

At
the height of the plague and the Thirty Years' War, the people of
Oberammergau made a solemn promise to God that they would perform the
Passion of Jesus Christ if their village as spared the grim fate of so
many other villages in Europe at the time: extinction. Since 1634, the
people of Oberammergau have kept that promise alive, performing the
play 40 times over the years and creating a unique cultural tradition
in the process.
The tradition continues in 2010 as the residents of Oberammergau
perform the play for the 41st time. A cast of over 2,000 will reenact
the last days of Jesus Christ's life; from his triumphant entry into
Jerusalem to his death on the Cross and the Ressurection. The timeless
sotyr is told over the course of an afternoon and evening in a unique,
open-air theater where a roof covers the audience, yet the stage is
open to the sky above.
