Day 2 • San José
area
Our introduction to Costa Rica begins today with a full day excursion.
Our first stop is at the Doka Estate, a coffee plantation in Alajuela.
Here we take an interesting tour where we learn the history of coffee
and its importance to Costa Rica’s economy. On our tour, our
guide shows us the process of growing, harvesting and roasting coffee
beans. We see the transformation from coffee plants as seedlings to the
roasted bean. Afterwards, there is time to sample the different types
of coffee made at Doka. Next, we travel to the nearby Poás
volcano to see the world’s second largest crater. Finally we travel to
the La Paz Waterfall Gardens. Here we have lunch followed by a visit to
the butterfly garden, aviary and a hike through the grounds to see the
amazing waterfalls. After a busy day, we return to San
José for time to relax. B/L/D
Day 3 • Tortuguero
Today we depart in the early morning and travel by bus through the
Braullio Carillo National Park, which is made up of spectacular
rainforest. We also drive by a banana plantation, one of the most
important industries in the Costa Rican economy. Finally, we board
boats and travel across canals to reach Tortuguero, the nesting ground
of endangered sea turtles. We arrive in Tortuguero just in time for
lunch. Following lunch, we relax at the hotel before visiting the town
of Tortuguero and the Caribbean conservation Museum. B/L/D

We spend today learning about the amazing giant turtles and their
legacy. We tour the Tortuguero National Park by taking boat tours of
the secondary canals, hiking through the rainforest to the high point
in Tortuguero, called the Cerro de Tortuguero, and hiking on the nature
trails near the lodge. B/L/D
Day 5 • La Fortuna
After breakfast, we leave Tortuguero by boat and we meet up with our
coach for a scenic drive to La Fortuna, home of the amazing Arenal
Volcano, which has been active since it erupted in 1968 after years of
lying dormant. We arrive with some time to explore the town and relax.
This evening we see the Arenal Volcano at its best as we spend the
evening relaxing in the hot springs and watching the red-hot lava
flow. B/D
Day 6 • La Fortuna
An exciting in day is in store today as we meet our rafting guides and
travel to the Sarapiquí River. After donning helmets, life-vests
and
oars, we enjoy a scenic ride along the Sarapiquí. Our guide

navigate rapids and we enjoy the scenery of the lushly vegetated
gorges, beautiful waterfalls and pools. Costa Rica has the best
white-water rafting in the world; the beauty and excitement of this
majestic river are unsurpassable. After our exciting day we return to
La Fortuna in the late afternoon. B/L/D |

nearby pool formed by the waterfall. We leave La Fortuna this morning
and take a take a very interesting drive to the cloud forests of
Monteverde. Arriving in the mid-afternoon we check into our hotel and
relax before dinner. This evening we take a guided night walk in
the
