Saturday, June 13 • Depart
We depart the United States on our scheduled flight to Madrid, Spain.
Meals, beverages and complimentary headset are included on our flight. In-flight D
Sunday, June 14 • Madrid
Upon our arrival in Spain’s capital city we visit the Museo del Prado,
Spain’s most famous art museum where we have a chance to see paintings
by Spain’s most famous artists, including Velázquez, Goya and El
Greco.
Afterwards, we take a stroll in nearby Retiro Park. The remainder of
the day is free for shopping and sightseeing on our own. In-flight B/D
Monday, June 15 •
Madrid
This morning we tour Madrid by bicycle. On our tour we see sights such
as Spain’s Plaza Mayor in the heart of the city, and the Plaza de
Cibeles, where the very distinctive Banco de España and Madrid’s
main
post office are located. We also see the Plaza de España with
its
statues of Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.
Finally,
we tour the spectacular Palacio Real. This lavish palace took 26
years
to build and has over 1200 rooms. We enjoy the afternoon for some
shopping and sightseeing on our own. B/D
Tuesday, June 16 • Madrid
We take a full-day excursion to Segovia today. Here our local guide
takes us on a tour of the Alcázar. Built atop a rocky hill, this
fortress was rebuilt in 1862 after a fire. We also see the city’s
Gothic cathedral and its ancient aqueduct that was built in the first
century and used well into the 19th century. After some time for lunch,
we continue on to Santa Cruz del Valle de los Caídos, Franco’s
stupendous monument to those who fell in the Spanish Revolution.
Finally we visit El Escorial, one of the most impressive monasteries in
Europe. We return to Madrid in time for dinner. B/D |
Wednesday, June 17 • Córdoba
Today we have a long, but scenic drive through La Mancha and into
Andalusia to Córdoba. Upon our arrival, we take a tour of
La Mezquita, the great mosque that was originally built in the year
785. The mosque is unique because in the 16th century, a
cathedral was built in center of it. After our tour, we take a
walk through the Jewish quarter and admire the towering walls,
cobblestone streets and the wrought ironwork found on many of the
buildings. We enjoy the remainder of the day at
leisure. B/D
Thursday, June 18 • Sevilla
We depart Córdoba and take the short drive to Sevilla, where,
upon our arrival, we meet our local guide for a tour of the capital of
Andalusia. Our tour includes a stroll through María Luisa Park
and a visit to the nearby Plaza de España and other pavilions
built for the 1929 Spanish American Exhibition. We also visit
Sevilla’s famous Catedral, the third largest in the world. This immense
Gothic cathedral took over a century to build and its bell tower, La
Giralda, was originally part of a mosque built by the Almohads. Inside
the Catedral we see the tomb of Columbus. We also have a chance to
climb up La Giralda tower to get a spectacular view of the city. After
our tour, we enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. This evening we
are in for a special treat as we attend a performance of the Andalusian
Flamenco dance! B/D
Friday, June 19 • Granada
We drive southeast this morning to Granada. We take some time to
have lunch after our arrival and then enjoy a tour of La Alhambra. This
Moorish palace was built when the Nasrid dynasty ruled Granada. La
Alhambra is designed to be a paradise on earth. We also visit the
nearby Generalife Gardens used by the Nasrid kings as a retreat from
the palace. After our tour we have some free time in the city,
including a visit to the Capilla Real where we have a chance to see the
crypt where the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, are
buried. The remainder of the evening is at our leisure. B/D

Saturday, June 20 • Granada
Today we enjoy a full day excursion to the Costa del Sol where we spend
the day relaxing on the beach. There is also ample time for
shopping
and sightseeing. We return to Granada in the late afternoon for dinner
in our hotel. B/D
Sunday, June 21 • Toledo
We drive north through Andalusia and up into La Mancha to Toledo. Upon
our arrival we meet our local guide, who shows us the rich history of
this walled city and formal capital of Spain. Our sightseeing
includes
tours of La Catedral, with its mixture of different styles of
architecture including French Gothic, Renaissance and Mudéjar.
We also
see La Sinagoga del Tránsito and La Iglesia de Santo
Tomé, which houses
The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, one of El Greco’s masterpieces. After
our tour, we check into our hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at
leisure. B/D
Monday, June 22 • Return
Sadly we transfer to Madrid’s Barajas Airport for our return flight to
the United States. We return with memories of new friends, beautiful
landscapes, cathedrals and palaces. ¡Bienvenidos a casa! B/In-flight D
