After breakfast, we depart Germany’s capital and drive into Saxony and its capital, Dresden. Upon our arrival, we enjoy a locally-guided city tour of one of Germany’s most beautiful cities. Our local guide explains how the city was heavily damaged during World War II and how such famous landmarks as the Semperoper and the Zwinger have been restored to their original glory. The rest of the afternoon is free for further exploration of the city. B/D

Sunday, June 21 • Rothenburg
Our destination today is the beautiful medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Upon arrival, we visit the Kriminalmuseum and learn about crime and punishment in medieval times. The rest of the afternoon is free for our own exploration. For those who enjoy a bird’s eye view of the city and the surrounding countryside, a walk along the city wall is in order. Each street looks like a postcard and you’re sure to recognize the Plönlein, used by countless publications as a picture of “typical” Germany.  B/D

Monday, June 22 • Munich
Driving deeper into Bavaria, today’s destination is Munich, Bavaria’s friendly capital city. First we visit the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial with personal audio guides. After ample time to view the museum exhibit and various reconstructed buildings, we return to Munich in time for dinner. B/D

After our tour and time for lunch, we have free time to explore the pedestrian zone or take the U-Bahn to the Olympic Grounds, site of the 1972 Summer Games. There are many options for exploring the Olympic Grounds: a walk around the lakes, paddleboat rental, swimming in the swimming hall or taking the elevator to the top of the Olympic Tower. Other possible activities this afternoon include a visit to the Deutsches Museum or one of Munich’s many art museums.  B/D

Thursday, June 25 • Reutte
We return to Bavaria today and drive to the village of Oberammergau. Famous as the location of a massive Passion Play production, performed every 10 years, Oberammergau is also home to the largest concentration of woodcarvers in Germany. Many of the buildings in the center of town are richly decorated with Luftmalerei – paintings on the façade of a building that depict a story such as Little Red Riding Hood, among others. After time for lunch, we drive a short distance to the rococo Schloß Linderhof, King Ludwig II’s favorite palace. Built as a hunting lodge, each room is ornately decorated in gold, silver and silk. After our tour and a chance to explore the gardens surrounding the palace we drive to Reutte, just across the border in Austria, for our overnight. B/D

Friday, June 26 • Wilderswil
Before we make our way towards Wilderswil, Switzerland, we stop at the lovely Wieskirche and enjoy a brief photo stop at Schloß Neuschwanstein. We also take a short break in the tiny country of Liechtenstein, sandwiched between Switzerland and Austria. We arrive in Lucerne in the afternoon and have the opportunity to view the touching Löwendenkmal and the stunning Chapel Bridge before transferring to our hotel in Wilderswil, in the heart of Berner Oberland.  B/D

From here, it’s an easy and leisurely hike to the Kleine Scheidegg. Each turn of the path affords a breathtaking view of the Alps and the villages in the valley. Once at the Kleine Scheidegg, there are several options: shopping, another short hike up to a glacier or perhaps a lunch of the Swiss specialty - Rösti. In the late afternoon, we take another cogwheel train down the mountain to Grindelwald, where we take another train back to Wilderswil.  B/D

Monday, June 29 • Rüdesheim
Our final full day in Germany has us driving out of the Black Forest and towards the town of Rüdesheim on the Rhine. As we cruise along, we hear about the history of the many castles (most in ruins) that dot the hillsides along the river. Just before we disembark in St. Goarshausen, we pass the famous Lorelei. Our coach meets us in St. Goarshausen and returns us to Rüdesheim, where we have an opportunity to do some last minute shopping.  B/D
