Day 1 • Depart
We depart the United States on our scheduled flight to Madrid, Spain.
Meals, beverages and complimentary headset are included on our flight. In-flight D
Day 2 • Madrid
Upon our arrival in Spain’s capital city, we transfer to our hotel
where we drop off our luggage and have a chance to freshen up a
bit. Our leader acquaints us with the heart of Madrid as we walk
to the Puerta del Sol area. Here we can easily find an ATM
machine to get euros and also check out El Corte Inglés, Spain’s
famous department store chain. We learn a bit about Madrid’s city
center as we check out Madrid’s Plaza Mayor. We return to our hotel in
the late afternoon for some time to relax before dinner. In-flight B/D
Day 3 • Madrid
This morning, we tour Madrid by bicycle. On our tour, we see sights
such as Spain’s Plaza Mayor in the heart of the city, the Plaza de
Cibeles where the very distinctive Banco de España and Madrid’s
main post office are located. We also see the Plaza de España
with its statues of Miguel de Cervantes and Don Quixote and Sancho
Panza. We take a break for lunch on our own and a little free
time. Finally, we tour the spectacular Palacio Real. This
lavish palace took 26 years to build and has over 1200 rooms. We enjoy
the remainder of the afternoon for some shopping and sightseeing on our
own. B/D
Day 4 • Madrid
Our first stop today is Madrid’s famous Museo del Prado. We have
plenty of time to check out artwork here by Velazquéz, Goya, El
Greco and many other well-known artists. Afterwards, we take a
stroll in nearby Retiro Park where we might want to get a bite to eat
or even have a picnic. This afternoon we see how many of
the beautiful tapestry rugs and decorations in the Palacio Real were
made as we take a short tour of Madrid’s Royal Tapestry
factory. B/D

Day 5 • Madrid
We take a full-day excursion via public bus to Segovia today. Upon our
arrival we take tour (audio guides included) of the
Alcázar. Built
atop a rocky hill, this fortress was rebuilt in 1862 after a fire. We
also see the city’s Gothic cathedral and its ancient aqueduct that was
built in the first century and used well into the 19th century. We
enjoy the rest of the afternoon to explore Segovia on our own, before
returning to Madrid in time for dinner. B/D
Day 6 • Madrid
Another excursion is in store for us today as we board a high-speed
train that takes us to Toledo in just over half-an hour. Upon our
arrival we get acquainted with Toledo as take the Zocatren that winds
around the town and also gives us that beautiful view of Toledo and the
Tagus river. After getting our bearings, we meet a local guide
who
gives us more insight into this beautiful city. Our sightseeing
includes tours of La Catedral with its mixture of different styles of
architecture including French Gothic, Renaissance and Mudéjar,
La
Sinagoga del Tránsito and La Iglesia de Santo Tomé, which
houses The
Burial of the Count of Orgaz, one of El Greco’s masterpieces.
After
our tour, we have plenty of time to have lunch and further explore
Toledo on our own before boarding the train that takes us back to
Madrid. B/D
Day 7 • Madrid
For our final day in Madrid we visit the Reina Sofía Museum to
see
Pablo Picasso’s Guernica. Those who are diehard art-lovers
can also
visit the nearby Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. In the afternoon we
take
an excursion out to see the Bernabeu Soccer Stadium, home of the Real
Madrid soccer team. We have time on our own for last minute
shopping
and other sightseeing. B/D
Day 8 • Return
Sadly we meet our coach for our transfer to Madrid’s Barajas Airport
for our return flight to the United States. We return with memories of
new friends, beautiful landscapes, cathedrals and palaces.
