Day 1 • Depart
Today we depart the United States on our overnight flight to Germany. In-flight D

Day 2 • Munich
We arrive in Munich this morning, collect our luggage and have a private coach transfer to our Munich hostel. After time to secure our luggage at the hostel, we begin our visit of Munich with an afternoon of orientation around the Marienplatz, home of the famous Glockenspiel. We return to our hostel in time for dinner and enjoy the remainder of the evening free to get to know the other travelers in the hostel. In-flight B/D

Day 3 • Munich
Our first full day in Bavaria’s friendly capital begins when we travel by U-Bahn to the center of the city and meet our guide from Mike’s Bike Tours. We spend the morning pedaling along Munich’s bike paths and through parks, learning about the rich history of the city, as well as some local trivia. During our tour, we stop in the Englischer Garten and have time to purchase lunch at the Chinese Tower (Chinesischer Turm). In the afternoon, we visit the Geschiwster-Scholl Museum at the Maximillian Universität. Here we see the building where the Scholl siblings studied, but also artifacts from their resistance to the Nazi regime. B/D

Day 4 • Munich
This morning we visit the extensive Deutsches Museum, Germany’s premiere technical museum. The museum’s collection is so extensive that we can only see a fraction of it during our visit. However, we are sure to explore the exhibit on coal mining, as it is designed so that museum visitors feel like they’re entering a real coal mine! We visit Munich’s large market, the Viktualienmarkt, where we purchase our lunch from the bakers, butchers and vegetable stands. This afternoon, we explore Schwabing, a trendy residential area that is home to many artists. B/D

Day 5 • Munich
Our day begins with an excursion by S-Bahn to Dachau, a suburb northwest of Munich, for a visit to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial. Built in 1933, the grounds of the camp have been preserved as a museum and reminder to the atrocities of the Nazi regime.  In addition to the extensive exhibits, our audio guides also tell us about the barracks, prison and general living conditions. We return to Munich in the afternoon and visit the Olympic Grounds, home of the 1972 Summer Games. The rest of the afternoon is free to explore the area. Some may want to swim in the same hall where Mark Spitz won 7 gold medals, while others may be more interested in renting a paddleboat or taking the elevator to the top of the Olympic Tower. B/D

Day 6 • Munich
We depart Munich this morning on a train to Prien am Chiemsee, a spa town in southeastern Bavaria. Upon our arrival at the train station, we take a moment to purchase lunch supplies at the local grocery store before walking down to the Chiemsee, one of Bavaria’s most popular lakes. We board a ferry to the islands in the middle of the lake: Herreninsel and Fraueninsel. After our picnic on the Herreninsel, we walk along a path to Herrenchiemsee Palace, one of King Ludwig’s spectacular palaces. Modeled after Versailles, the Bavarian Treasury ran out of money and Ludwig mysteriously died before it could be completed. At the conclusion of our tour, we continue on to the Fraueninsel, where we have time to walk around the small island and admire the fishing village and the 9th century convent. We return to Munich in time for dinner at our hostel. B/D

Day 7 • Munich
Our last day in Munich begins with a tour of Nymphenburg Palace, home to the Wittelsbach family that ruled Bavaria for centuries.  In addition to our tour of the elegant palace, we also have time to explore the extensive gardens and park-like grounds surrounding the palace. The rest of the day is free for last minute shopping or perhaps one more museum visit. B/D

Day 8 • Return
We pack our bags this morning and board our private coach to the Munich International Airport for our return flight to the United States. Our memories include the beautiful Chiemsee, Munich’s mile-long pedestrian mall and much more. B/In-flight L
