Friday, June 19 • La Fortuna
Departing San José, we travel to the Doka Estate, a coffee plantation in Alajuela. Here we take an interesting tour where we learn the history of coffee and its importance to Costa Rica’s economy. On our tour, our guide shows us the process of growing, harvesting and roasting coffee beans. We see the transformation from coffee plants as seedlings to the roasted bean.  Afterwards, there is time to sample the different types of coffee made at Doka. Next we travel to the nearby Poás volcano to see the world’s second largest crater. The crater spans nearly one mile across and contains steam and muddy water that have been spewed up to 660 feet by the geysers in the crater. After some time to learn about the crater at the nearby visitors center and do some hiking in the area, we continue on to La Fortuna, home of the amazing Arenal Volcano, which has been active since it erupted in 1968, after years of lying dormant.   B/D

Saturday, June 20 • La Fortuna
An exciting day is in store today as we meet our rafting guides and travel to the Sarapiquí River. After donning helmets, life-vests and oars, we enjoy a scenic ride along the Sarapiquí. Our guide helps us navigate rapids and we enjoy the scenery of the lushly vegetated gorges, beautiful waterfalls and pools. Costa Rica has the best white-water rafting in the world; the beauty and excitement of this majestic river are unsurpassable. After our exciting day we return to La Fortuna with time to explore the town. This evening we see the Arenal Volcano at its best as we spend the evening relaxing in the hot springs and watching the red-hot lava flow.  B/L/D

Sunday, June 21 • Monteverde
After breakfast this morning we enjoy a short but steep hike down to the Rio Fortuna Waterfall and enjoy the sights and sounds of the waterfall. Those who like may want to take a swim in the nearby pool formed by the waterfall. We leave La Fortuna this morning and take a take a very interesting drive to the cloud forests of Monteverde. Arriving in the mid-afternoon we check into our hotel and relax before dinner.  This evening we take a guided night walk in the rain forest. This tour gives us the opportunity to see nocturnal creatures in action.  Be sure to bring your flashlight! B/D
Monday, June 22 • Monteverde
Our busy day starts off with a visit and tour of one of the world’s largest butterfly gardens, where we learn about the life cycle of the butterfly. We also see a unique hummingbird garden with many varieties of these amazing birds. We break for an early lunch and then take an exciting zip-line canopy tour through the canopy of the cloud forest. The tour consists of short hikes between platforms from which we zip across cables for a thrilling ride through the treetops. During our tour, our guide points out the awesome number of plants and animals that are found in the cloud forest preserve.  B/L/D
